Embraced by mist-shrouded tea terraces, Songyang is a place China's relentless modernization has largely bypassed. Here history is not kept in museums — it is lived, one step at a time along the weathered stones of the GUDAO, the ancient trails that have connected these villages for 1,800 years.

More than seventy-five traditional villages are scattered across Songyang, a higher concentration than anywhere else in eastern China. Inside their rammed-earth walls and silvery beams, courtyards are still alive with the chatter of elders kneading green dough for qingmingguo, the delicate sweetness answered by the clinking of tea glasses.

A new generation is returning too — quietly converting ancestral homes into minimalist guesthouses, workshops and cafés, preserving the architecture their grandparents built. The result is a rare haven for authentic rural life with the comfort of thoughtful hospitality.

Meet your guide at Lishui station or airport, then drive an hour into the mountain-folded world of Songyang and settle into your boutique hotel.

Rest, or wander lanes lined with woodcarvers, metalsmiths, and tea merchants. A rooftop coffee looks out over grey-tiled roofs toward Dushan Mountain, watched for a thousand years by a Song Dynasty pavilion.
